home comforts: day nineteen
It's a beautiful, quiet morning. X went to the office with theother23. (That's not what makes it beautiful, but it sure does make it quiet.)
I have putzed around the garden, picking the most ripe tomatoes and bringing them in for lunch/supper. My neighbor, who was also in his garden, gave me another dozen ears of sweet corn, which we'll grill tonight. That said, I wish that I could eat it RIGHT NOW.
These days when it's JUST me, I think ... who am I? What do I do with myself? What do I want to do with myself?
And then, I remember ten billion dozen things that NEED to be done, whether I want to do them or not.

tomatoes and corn for morning snack - why not?
Do bacon wrapped corn when you grill it.
Sometimes I just love being in my quiet apartment all by myself. It's calm & quiet and I can do whatever I want (and usually not what I need to do). This is out of the blue, but will you be home schooling X throughout high school?
@toxicned - Hello, I'm vegan!!! So, I don't even put butter on it.
@key19 - Yes, she will be homeschooled throughout high school. She only has two years left as she is a junior now! You were in high school when I *met* you!!! Isn't that crazy?! (Also, SHE REALLY DOES NOT WANT TO GO TO PUBLIC SCHOOL.)
@soNOTcool - Fine, then use facon! Well, that actually won't work as well and pass over the proper taste.... Then I suggest garlic pepper as a nice seasoning.
@soNOTcool - Yes I was in high school... let's not go there. And now I will be graduating college. I thought she was at high school level, I just wasn't sure. Are you looking at any universities?
@key19 - She is most interested in University of Wisconsin-Madison. It's close enough that she could live at home while attending, which is what she wants to do. We're thinking of building an apartment above the garage for this purpose. Tomorrow is the new episode of Project Runway. Yay!! If I can find it, I have to link you to a funny clip of Anderson Cooper where he was making fun of the chick on the show that always uses "leatha". Heh.
@key19 - It's all in the first minute: http://perezhilton.com/2008-08-05-anderson-cooper-hates-the-lohans
@toxicned - I still might make the bacon corn for TO23 and X. They would love it. I would too, frankly, but I'm trying to stick with it, darn it. The seasoning sounds great, thanks. Lately, I've been soaking them in water, brushing on olive oil and seasoning (and looking for different varieties, like cayenne), then wrapping them in foili and putting them on the grill. Magnificent. I haven't tried garlic yet, so maybe tonight!!
How do you have the energy and patience for home schooling? Maybe it's because we had 5 children at home at one time. I think that might have been bedlam. LOL
I have never grilled corn, but I'd like to try it. I do other veggies and I love them, especially sweet peppers.
Ava
@avajsouth - I am really, really, REALLY lucky because our daughter is naturally an avid learner and loves to read both fiction and non-fiction books. She is very curious about science and also enjoys language, literature, and most subjects. She is mostly self taught, and I just fill in the gaps. The beauty of it is that in the subjects she excels in and enjoys, she can delve as far into it as she would like, much more so than if she attended school. She can really hone her strengths.
Also, you should definitely try grilled corn. Absolutely delicious. I included the recipe that I generally use in one of the comments above. In addition, we cook it in the foil for about 30 minutes, turning it two to three times. I like it lightly browned in spots. Just be sure to soak the corn (after shucking it) for at least a half hour to help it steam in the aluminum foil.
@soNOTcool - Ahaha! "I LOVE LEATHAAA!" I haven't been able to watch the show because I have been working Thursday nights, the last one I saw was where they designed the outfit for Brooke Shields. I have to catch up.
Corn! I'm so glad I'm going to my parents' this weekend! My friend's dad has acres of corn fields, but I never think to ask her for any.
all this corn talk sounds SO good! i've never soaked mine, i'll have to try that. i once made a parmesan garlic and butter spread, very decadent!
love the depth of field in this shot and the touch of color of the insect, very summery
@Southland - Oooh, if you have that recipe I'd love to try it. X and theother23 might like it, and maybe I can rework it for myself to be kind of vegan-y.
@soNOTcool - UWisconsin/Madison is exciting! I can believe that you have a child that wants to live at home because you are, well, cool. I wanted to run for the hills at X's age. You must rock.
I have a photo I took this weekend with blackeyed susans COVERED with these bugs.
